One of the hallmarks of eukaryotic cell organization is the ability to compartmentalize biological molecules using membranes. The selective flow of information across membranes via membrane-associated proteins enables complex signaling pathways that are vital for cells to make decisions and adapt to their environment. Some membrane-associated proteins, such as GPCRs, form nanoscale structures that are related to their function in signaling pathways. A thorough understanding of cell signaling necessitates the simultaneous observation of multiple specific proteins and the surrounding membrane structures. The goal of my research is to make this possible by developing multicolor protein labels for electron microscopy..
