Bianca Mulaney, who is earning her secondary major in MCB and her primary in Economics, has won a 2016 Marshall Scholarship to study in the United Kingdom.
“Bianca has been very interested in the intersection of economics and molecular biology, specifically focusing on the economic impacts of the rise of antibiotic resistance in bacterial populations,” said Karine Gibbs, MCB professor and Mulaney’s tutor. “I am immensely proud of her and know that she will do fabulous work while studying as a Marshall Scholar.”
“The Marshall Scholarship will fund my pursuit of two master’s degrees in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and One Health (Infectious Diseases) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM),” Mulaney said.
Mulaney’s interest in the economic aspects of molecular biology has led her to pursue multidisciplinary work in several locations, from the Kolter Lab at Harvard Medical to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“In the future, I hope to make broad-ranging contributions to healthcare as a researcher, policy advisor, and healthcare executive,” she said. “At the moment, I’m still in a state of disbelief. I feel a mixture of pure happiness, disbelief, relief, and gratitude. I’m happy to have this opportunity. Above all, I’m grateful for the many teachers, advisors, friends, and family who not only helped me through this process, but also have shaped me into the person I am today.”
