Jeff Lichtman Named Dean of Science for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences

Commencing today, July 1st, MCB’s Jeff Lichtman will embark on a new chapter as the Dean of Science for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, a role that underscores MCB’s influence within the broader Harvard community.

“I am thrilled to welcome Jeff into this new role and to have him advancing the extraordinary possibilities in the Science Division,” says Hopi Hoekstra, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. “Jeff thinks big, as evidenced by his own research program and his vision for pedagogy. As a scientist, an educator, and a leader, Jeff brings people together in genuine collaboration to advance the frontiers of knowledge.”

“I see my primary role as helping empower the science departments to agilely navigate their mandates in research and teaching and look for guidance from the departments as to how the science division office can be of the most help,” Lichtman says of his new responsibilities. “I hope to foster greater interdepartmental coordination in the rapidly evolving areas of science that span multiple departments.”

Owing to his personal interest in education, Lichtman plans on spending considerable time exploring ways that science education can adapt to the opportunities and challenges that ready access to information brings to science students.

“The Science division staff is a supremely talented and dedicated team and all of us want to be helpful as possible in assuring our science faculty grow and flourish,” he adds. “It is an extraordinary time to be a scientist and given the resources we have here at Harvard, we should try to make the most of it!”
