MCB faculty Catherine Dulac has been elected to the American Philosophical Society (APS), one of the most venerated scholarly organizations in the United States. The APS is a society of learned individuals, founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743, in order to “promote useful knowledge.”
Its members include distinguished scientists and scholars from a wide range of disciplines. “It is very humbling to be associated with such an amazing group of scholars and leaders,” says Dulac. “The society’s historical significance and commitment to promoting all sorts of intellectual pursuits are inspiring. I’m delighted and greatly honored to become part of this group.”
In addition to honoring outstanding scientists and thinkers, the APS hosts a biannual meeting, where its members present their work to other APS members. “The diversity and significance of intellectual inquiries undertaken by members of the American Philosophical Society are very impressive,” says Dulac.”And I was told that the Annual meetings are amazing feats of scholarship in all sorts of disciplines, so I’m looking forward to meeting and exchanging ideas with other members of the society.”
MCB chair Venkatesh Murthy is delighted by Dulac’s election to the APS. “Catherine is one of the most accomplished scientists of her generation, and we are lucky to have her as a colleague at Harvard,” he says. “Her election to the APS is particularly wonderful because she is also a deep scholar, with very broad interests. I am hoping she will bring back philosophical insights to MCB from her interactions with other APS members!”
