At an age of 6-7 days, larval zebrafish start to actively hunt small prey such as paramecia. In doing so, they are often capable of selecting the closest prey and to adapt their hunting behavior accordingly. Using a combination of behavior tracking, virtual reality, and whole-brain imaging, I’m trying to understand which distance cues zebrafish use during hunting and how the underlying neuronal circuits might work. In my previous work in the lab of Fritjof Helmchen at the University of Zurich, I concentrated on developing novel imaging techniques for neuroscience and established the mesoSPIM Initiative, an open hardware project aimed at providing the microscopy community with highly capable light-sheet microscopes for imaging cleared tissue.
