American Society of Mammalogists Awards Highest Honor to Hopi Hoekstra

MCB and OEB joint faculty Hopi Hoekstra has received the 2019 C. Hart Merriam Award from the American Society of Mammalogists (ASM). The award—established in 1974 and named for pioneering zoologist C. Hart Merriam—recognizes outstanding contributions to the study of mammals. It is the highest honor awarded by the ASM.

The ASM awards committee cited Hoekstra’s innovative work using genetic techniques in field experiments with wild mice and her ability to design experiments that “close the loop” on long-standing questions in evolutionary biology. They also noted her commitment to training younger scientists.

“I was absolutely surprised and delighted to receive this award,” Hoekstra says. “It is particularly special because the American Society of Mammalogists was the first society I joined when I was a graduate student and the annual meetings were very formative. It is a fantastic community.”

Congratulations to Professor Hoekstra!
