MCB 80 Neurobiology of Behavior

Instructors: Jeff Lichtman and Joshua Sanes

Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the ways in which the brain controls mental activities. The first unit provides a general introduction to the cells, circuits and systems of the brain. Next is a more detailed coverage of the electrical and chemical bases of neural function. The second half of the course then explores the extent to which cellular and molecular mechanisms are providing new insights into topics such as perception, learning, plasticity, memory, language, aging, emotion, recovery from neural injury, individual differences, and mental illness.

MCB 80 is taken by a broad spectrum of students. Some are prospective neurobiology concentrators, but most are students in fields to which neuroscience is increasingly related (e.g., psychology, history of science, philosophy of science, computer science, biology and engineering ). By and large, the students are fascinated by the brain (who isn't?) and enthusiastic about the course.

Teaching Fellow Duties

Each week, Teaching Fellows attend the two 90-minute lectures, and lead a 90-minute section. The section helps students understand the lecture material through review and discussion, and also provides an enrichment for those interested in further depth. Responsibilities also include grading short quizzes and grading exams. TFs are compensated $5,700 (post-docs and senior graduate students) or $5,000 (G1 and G2 graduate students) per section. Many choose to teach two sections.

Please send a CV that includes your current position, lab affiliation, and previous teaching experience to Joshus Sanes (sanesj@mcb.harvard.edu).

MCB 54

Course Description

MCB 54 teaches an integrated introduction to the structure, function, and interactions of cells, with an emphasis on their molecular composition and dynamics. Topics covered include: membrane structure and transport; receptors and channels; protein targeting; cytoskeleton; cell cycle control; signal transduction; programmed cell death; cell adhesion, and differentiation.

Teaching Fellow Responsibilities

Teaching Fellows are an integral part of the course and really make a difference in the students’ experience. Weekly sections integrate laboratory work and discussion of lecture material.  Assignments will focus on writing, problem solving and the critical evaluation of data.

Teaching fellows attend all lectures (MWF, Science Center Hall B), run weekly sections including discussion and laboratory components, grade all section assignments and participate in exam grading.   Teaching fellows are also expected to attend weekly staff meetings and 4 lab pre-runs.  Teaching Fellows are generously compensated at $9,120 for the semester (this is the senior pay scale for graduate students who have finished their required teaching and for post-doctoral fellows).

LS1b: Genetics, Genomics, and Evolution

Course Description

Life Sciences 1B is an interdisciplinary course designed to teach genetics and genomics in an evolutionary framework. The course is taught at the introductory level and the majority of students are freshmen. Topics to be covered include how biological variation that we see reflects differences among genes and genomes, how genetic information is transmitted, how it functions, how it mutates from one form to another, how it interacts with the environment, how it is regulated developmentally and how it changes through time.

Teaching Fellow Duties

Teaching fellows lead a weekly section that combines laboratory and discussion, and grade all section assignments.  TFs must also attend all lectures (TuTh 10-11:30am in Sanders Theater), staff meetings and pre-runs.  Teaching Fellows are compensated $9,120 (post-docs and G3 or more senior) or $8,000 (G1 or G2) for the semester.
