The activity of the master regulator PAL-1 is sufficient to specify the cell fate within the C lineage early during the development of C. elegans. PAL-1 achieves this by driving the gene expression of a number of transcription factors as well as a potential signaling protein, the wingless homologue, Cwn-1. I am currently trying to identify whether the activity of this signaling protein is essential for early development and whether it is required for the cell fate specification within the C lineage.
