RNAi
In C.elegans, RNA interference spreads between cells. This spread is made possible by SID-1, a transmembrane protein that transports dsRNA. Mammals have two SID-1 homologs that are widely expressed, but whose functions and importance are unclear. I plan to investigate the role and significance of mammalian SID-1 homologs via loss-of-function studies in mice.
